WHO: LaTia McNeely-Sandiford was born and raised in Jersey City amongst the perils of drug addiction, family dysfunction and a declining environment. LaTia’s mother died when she was 9, she had her first child at 13 and soon after found herself a victim of domestic violence. Despite the overwhelming challenges presented in LaTia’s life, she remained resilient, confident and determined to succeed. In 1995, LaTia earned an Associate Degree from Hudson County Community College, 1997- a Bachelors Degree from Jersey City State (now New Jersey City University) and 2002- a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Rutgers University. Until December 2010, LaTia served as a Social Worker for inner cities families. Today, LaTia has beaten the odds and emerged as successful survivor. Her inspirational memoir, Burdens in My Backpack was released in January. WHY: “I wasn’t going to allow things that I couldn’t change to determine my future,” LaTia said. “I knew my life could be different if I believed in myself, earned an education and made different choices. It is my hope that my book will inspire others to the same.”
