If you want to see Shakespeare in the park, there's really no reason to go to that other city across the Hudson and wait in line at the crack of dawn to get tickets. Instead, you can see Othello at Riverview-Fisk Park in the Heights. If your tastes are more musical than literary, you can listen to the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra at Liberty State Park. Or the Don Carter Quartet at Leonard Gordon Park. It's all part of a summer with far too many events than time to see them. But that's a good thing, according to Mayor Bret Schundler. "These musical performances are held in city parks all over Jersey City," he said last week, "making it easier for people to experience the beautiful sounds that fill the air of Jersey City." Two series, Summerfest 2000 and The Gazebo Concert Series, will hold free concerts throughout the city's parks this summer. The mayor and Bon Secours New Jersey Health System present the Gazebo series, held every Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. The series offers salsa, classic rock, jazz, oldies, rhythm & blues, and, yes, classic yarns from the Bard of Stratford-on-Avon. Summerfest 2000 has two venues. The first, held every Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m., will be from Liberty State Park. The second, entitled "Gospel Festival," will be from Arlington Park each Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. "The arts are an important part of Jersey City," said Schundler. "It's through the expression of our artists and their works that we as a community can better understand ourselves and the world around us."
