The Landmarks Conservancy will continue to celebrate National Historic Preservation Week annually. However, we will also hold historical tours throughout the seasons. This summer we plan to explore the Brennan Court House with an emphasis on its master architect, Hugh Roberts. We intend to walk through the wondrous Bergen Arches, recently named as one of New Jersey's most endangered historic sites by Preservation New Jersey. Autumn will bring walking tours of Summit Avenue and Sherman Place, one of Jersey City's most elegant residential neighborhoods; Communipaw-Lafayette Historic District, the cradle of New Jersey history; Washington Village, an historic Heights neighborhood atop the Palisades Cliffs; the Warehouse Historic District, home to significant industrial structures including the Powerhouse; and a special "Historic Hudson County Cemeteries" bus tour during Halloween in collaboration with members of the Hudson County History Advocates (Hoboken Historical Museum, Bayonne Historical Society, Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, Hudson County Department of Cultural & Heritage Affairs; New Jersey City University and other preservation-minded organizations in Hudson County).
Check our website for forthcoming schedules and details at www.jclandmarks.org. We are living in a Golden Age of Historic Preservation in Jersey City, whose solid foundation was laid by great visionaries like Ted Conrad, J. Owen Grundy, Morris Pesin, Audrey Zapp and Colin Egan.
We are fortunate to have groups like the Friends of the Loew's and the Embankment Preservation Coalition, among others, all working in unison to ensure that future generations will be able to admire and appreciate Jersey City's historic landmarks.
