I agree with Brian Stack's plan to cut down on the number of handicap spaces in Union City. I have seen people give their spaces to their children and grandchildren to use, when they no longer have a car or the handicap person has died.
Union City officials should require all individuals, with a handicap space, to submit a doctor's note to a parking committee of at least three people to certify their need for a handicap space on a yearly basis. In addition, a yearly fee of $50 should be imposed for the special parking privilege permit.
It is a shame that individuals who are really disabled and in need of a handicap space are made to wait because others don't give up their spaces when they are no longer needed.
