If you're opening a restaurant in Hoboken, the competition is tough - but that has not stopped Ross Berkowitz, the 27-year-old owner of the new Saladworks at 5 Marine View Plaza.

Not just salads

According to Berkowitz, Saladworks is unique because it offers a healthy meal with a lot of variety. Saladworks offers 14 Signature Salads, including the popular "Create Your Own" that lets the customers choose a lettuce, pasta, or spinach base and then add five toppings of their choosing. There are 15 homemade salad dressing choices to top your creation.

Not in a salad mood? Try one of the four homemade soups or one of the 18 freshly made sandwiches, wraps, and grilled panini. "I got into this business to take care of people's wants and needs," Berkowitz said. "People need to eat and they want to eat healthy."

The atmosphere

It's not just the food that attracts the customers. The atmosphere and pace of the restaurant draw them in as well. Berkowitz described the aura of the restaurant as a "few steps above fast-food, but a step below a gourmet restaurant where you need a reservation." He called this approach "quick casual." A customer can get a quick, healthy meal in an attractive, pastel-colored environment for around ten dollars.

The salad

I chose the "Create Your Own" salad for my dinner, thinking I would order more food later. I was wrong. The portion was huge, easily enough for a complete dinner if you add in the bread roll that came with it. As for the taste, it was excellent. I chose five toppings to top a romaine and iceberg lettuce base including: mozzarella cheese, mushrooms, red onions, bacon bits, and buffalo chicken.

Although my picks of toppings were not the healthiest, I enjoyed it immensely. Add in the Dijon honey dressing, and I was in salad heaven. The best part was that the staff mixed the dressing into the salad for me. It was a nice touch of customer service and I was able to dig right in.

Other signature salads include: BLT, Nicoise, Garden, Caesar, Fiesta, Buffalo Chicken, Greek, Spinach, Newport, Bently, Turkey Club, Mandarin Chicken, and Tivoli. The choice of toppings for the "Create Your Own" include: red onions, cucumbers, broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, green peppers, black olives, mushrooms, chopped eggs, homemade baked croutons, provolone, sunflower seeds, feta cheese, bacon, cheddar cheese, chow mein noodles, walnuts, craisins, sun dried tomatoes, mandarin oranges. The price for salads is $6.99 to $7.49.

Grilled panini

The grilled panini sandwiches are served on seasoned sour dough bread and come dressed with a complimentary sauce. The choices include: Turkey Kapos, which has roasted sliced turkey, cole slaw, sharp American cheese, and Russian dressing; Caprese, sliced mozzarella cheese, fresh tomatoes and basil, with balsamic vinaigrette; Fromano, sliced roasted chicken, roasted red peppers, and American cheese topped with homemade Horseradish sauce. Other favorites include: ham & cheese, grilled cheese, and chicken mozzarella. All of the grilled panini sandwiches are $6.99.

More food

The wraps are made on plain or tomato and basil flavored tortillas. All of the ingredients in the wraps are diced for easy eating. The choices include: Chicken Caesar, Veggie, Turkey Club, Chicken & Pepper, Buffalo Chicken, Oriental Wrap, and the classic Tuna Salad. The wraps are priced at $6.59 to $6.99.

Traditionalists can try a signature sandwich, which comes on your choice of roll. They offer a turkey club, a turkey sandwich, grilled chicken salad sandwich, and tuna salad sandwich. The Blue Pear Turkey sandwich combines roasted turkey, sliced pears, and melted blue cheese. All sandwiches are $6.99.
