After a hard-fought game with the Bengals, the Chargers (1-4) faced a bigger challenge as they took on the Eagles (3-0) in a week four of the JCC of Bayonne’s Indoor Flag Football Sr. Division showdown. The Chargers went to work quickly as Jaime Betancur tallied a rushing and receiving TD while also grabbing a two-point catch. Leading 14-0, Betancur also contributed on defense by picking off an Eagles pass at half-court. The interception helped to set up Jan Patrick Egan’s 15-yard TD and two-point snare, giving the Chargers a 22-0 advantage. The Eagles finally got on track as Ryan Ballance raced 20 yards to paydirt, making it 22-6, Chargers.
Using a three QB rotation, the Chargers kept driving as Janaaron Aquino, Jan Patrick Egan, and Malachi Smith called their own plays and scored at will. After an Ashley Solis eight-yard sprint off-tackle, Jaime Betancur made it 28-6, Chargers, with his third TD of the game. Betancur also recorded his second pick of the game to keep the high-powered Eagles off stride. With the Eagles camped at the Chargers’ 10-yard line, another miscue put the ball in the hands of Malachi Smith, who notched the Chargers’ third pick of the day.
As the clock ticked down, the Eagles made it 28-14 as Ryan Ballance rushed for his second TD followed by Tyler Cholankeril’s two-point catch. Two plays later, the Chargers padded their lead to 36-14 when Jan Patrick Egan latched onto a TD bullet and Jaime Betancur reeled in a two-point pass. With under two points remaining, the Chargers and Eagles traded TDs as Malachi Smith of the Chargers and James Bajor of the Eagles tallied on scoring passes. The Eagles had a chance to tighten the gap but the pass fell just out of reach of a wide-open Justin DeCicco as the Chargers downed the Eagles, 42-20.
