One of the only two or three council people in Hoboken who’s NOT running for mayor threw his support behind one of his colleagues in a note to supporters today.
Fifth Ward Councilman Peter Cunningham is supporting 4th Ward Councilwoman Dawn Zimmer. This is significant, as some speculated he may have decided to support 2nd Ward Councilwoman Beth Mason, who is rumored to be running but hasn’t announced yet.
However, last year, Cunningham sent a long letter to supporters saying he was concerned that the “reform” movement in town has split into two groups, and that Beth Mason’s refusal to support one of the school board slates had caused the reformers to lose the school board election. Apparently, some of Zimmer and Cunningham’s supporters have been at odds with a Mason’s supporters. Mason responded at the time as well. See the article from last May on the divided reform movement HERE.
Today, Cunningham told his supporters: “As you may have heard, Dawn is running for mayor. I strongly support her candidacy because she has the vision and leadership that Hoboken needs in these tough times. Please join me at McSwiggins for her kick-off fundraiser this Thursday, February 5th from 6:30 to 8:30. Minimum contribution is $35.00 for open bar and appetizers.”
So far, only Zimmer has announced she is running in the May election. Who else will do so? Stay tuned!
