On Monday the councilman backed several candidates running on the Democrats for Jersey City slate. The specific candidates running vary by ward and by district, but are all running in the 10D and 11D ballot position against several candidates running on the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) line. The HCDO candidates are running in the 10A and 11A ballot positions.
“Over the last six years, I have been working to reform the political landscape in Jersey City, and to continue that work there are specific points in time that we need more community involvement, tomorrow is one of those days,” Fulop said in a statement Monday. “In [the] June 7th election, amongst all the candidates for higher office, you will have opportunity in most areas in Jersey City to vote for two committee people at the bottom of the ballot off to the side. A Democratic Committee person is the first line of contact for community-related issues for your specific several neighborhood blocks.”
Interestingly, Fulop is not making any Assembly endorsements, even in the state’s 33rd legislative district, one of the few contested races tomorrow.
In that race, Hoboken attorney Ravi Bhalla is running against incumbent Assemblyman Ruben Ramos and Jersey City Police Detective Sean Connors – both of whom are supported by the HCDO. Voters can select two candidates to support, and the top two vote-getters will then run in the General Election in November.
Besides a portion of Jersey City, the 33rd includes Hoboken, Weehawken, and Union City.
Rumors that Fulop would make an assembly endorsement before the primary turned out not to be true, however.
“I am not involved or endorsing anyone in the Assembly,” Fulop said when asked if he backed any of the three Democrats running tomorrow. “I will support the Democratic nominee. Today I am focused on committee seats and Column D.”
GOP candidates Fernando Uribe and Christopher Garcia are also running for the Assembly in the 33rd District in the Republican Party primary.
