JERSEY CITY – An unidentified woman was allegedly shot and injured on Jersey City’s west end Saturday evening near a campaign event for Mary Jerramiah T. Healy.

No suspect or suspects were apprehended as of press time.

Few details regarding the incident were known as of 9:30 p.m. Saturday evening. Earlier Saturday night, Jersey City Police Department (JCPD) spokesman Edgar Martinez said officers were still investigating the alleged crime and had yet to submit a police report.

However, according to JCPD Stan Eason, “this is a rapidly progressing investigation.”

Martinez and Eason each emphasized the alleged incident was unrelated to Mayor Healy’s campaign event, which took place nearby.

It is unknown whether the victim was a guest at the campaign event.

Mayor Healy said he visited the victim Saturday evening and released this statement: “First and foremost, I visited the victim in the hospital, she is stable and my thoughts are with her and her family. I’ve spoken with the chief of police and we are committed to [conducting] a thorough investigation until those responsible for this senseless act are brought to justice to face the full extent of the law. Secondly, this is an unfortunate example of the senseless violence that occurs when the intentional mass production of handguns and the reckless distribution of such winds up in the hands of persons whose only intent is to commit a crime.”

Early Saturday morning, Healy and officials from Sims Metal Management destroyed 527 illegal firearms that were turned in recently as a result of the city’s ongoing Operation LifeSaver gun buyback program. – E. Assata Wright
