BAYONNE – The Schiller Institute NYC Chorus will perform a memorial service this Saturday, January 6, at the Teardrop Memorial in Bayonne to commemorate the 92 lives lost in a Christmas Day plane crash in 2016 that carried the entire Alexandrov Ensemble, a world-renowned Russian choir. The plane was transporting the ensemble to a performance in Syria, and journalists and doctors bringing medical aid and food. Russia gave the Teardrop Memorial to the United States in 2005 to commemorate lives lost on 9/11, 2001. The ceremony will also be attended by the Bayonne Fire Department and city officials.
The Shiller Institute NYC Chorus has been holding the celebration every year on the weekend of the Russian Orthodox Christmas. This Saturday, a gathering and wreath-laying service will take place from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Tear Drop Memorial at 51 Port Terminal Blvd.
Later in the day, the Schiller Institute Chorus and the Foundation for the Revival of Classical Culture will perform a musical commemoration for the Alexandrov Ensemble from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Faith Presbyterian Church at 152 W. 66th St. in New York City.
