This letter is in response to the letter written last week in the Weehawken Reporter by Mr. Artie Strandberg regarding the use of the Weehawken Stadium. On the day in question, I personally called the Recreation Coach who authorized the practice session for Artie’s two children and a friend. I immediately stopped them because they jumped the fence and the field was unsupervised. When the coach showed up the young men continued their practice session without interruption. Artie, no one was chased off the field. We are not trying to deny use of the facility but we are trying to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone to play in.
Remember many of the users of this field play baseball and football which have resulted in serious injuries over the years, especially when unsupervised. As a result our insurance companies have required tighter control whenever a serious injury has taken place.
I have been maintaining this field for close to 20 years and the biggest complaint from Recreation Personnel, including the late Louis Ferullo himself, was the use of this field unsupervised or without authorization (when this has happened it has often lead to vandalism and unnecessary injuries).
Any of our young athletes or adults can request the use of our field through myself (Department of Public Works) or the Recreation Department and I guarantee we will do everything we can to provide a Recreation Coach to supervise their play. All you have to do is ask.
Mr. Robert Barsa
Director of Public Works
