This summer, take time to enjoy the long days and warm nights and head for the great outdoors as Hoboken kicks off its free entertainment series, which is sponsored by Mayor Roberts, the city of Hoboken, and others.
With movies, concerts, fitness classes, and more there is something for everyone.
Get in shape
Don't let bathing suit season get you down. There is still time to get in shape and try out lots of different classes without making a commitment.
Every Monday night at Pier A Park, there will be free fitness classes from 7 to 8 p.m. offered by area gyms and studios. Locals can try Pilates, yoga, kickboxing and more.
The businesses offering the classes include: Premiere Pilates, Club KO, Dahn Yoga, Hudson Athletic Club, Scott Pilates, Hudson Athletic Club, Scott Pilates, Curves, Club H.
Participants should wear gym clothes and sneakers for fitness classes and bring a bottle of water.
Blockbuster films
Enjoy films under the stars every Wednesday night at Pier A Park in Hoboken. The movies begin at sunset, which is approximately 9 p.m. during June and July and around 8 p.m. in August.
Guests are invited to bring a blanket or a low chair. In addition, snacks can be purchased at the new concession stand (includes water, soda, popcorn, candy and more).
The selection includes many award-winning films (see sidebar for complete schedule) such as "Michael Clayton" starring George Clooney and recently deceased Sydney Pollack, who acted in addition to directing "Tootsie" and "Out of Africa."
Another audience favorite is the film "Juno" that discusses teen pregnancy.
The documentary "Sicko" by Michael Moore looks at the devastating effects of our health care system.
Additionally, there are several family friendly films including "Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix" and "Bee Movie."
Music and theater
Unleash your inner thespian with plays in the park!
The Hudson Shakespeare Company will perform "The Twelve Night," "King John" and "Julius Caesar." All performances will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at Shipyard Park or Sinatra Park in Hoboken. J CITY Theater will produce Ken Ludwig's "Moon Over Buffalo" at Sinatra Park for the last weekend in July and first two weekends in August. J CITY Theater is a member of the Hudson County Theatre Alliance and has performed several noteworthy productions including "Bees in Honey Drown" and the moving "Compression of a Tragedy," which was part of the Hudson County One-Act Festival last year. The Center for the Performing Arts at DeBaun will present "Bartholomew Fair, NJ" at Sinatra Park on July 11-13 and 18-20 with performances at 7 p.m. Friday to Sunday and additional matinee on Sundays at 4 p.m. For more information, visit: debaun.org.
The summer concert series will be held at Sinatra Park most Thursdays (see sidebar for complete schedule) from 7 to 9 p.m. The concerts will include many different kinds of music including: Big Band, Sinatra, country, folk, jazz, rock, swing and more.
Several of the bands performing are well-known in Hudson County like former Hobokenite Kate Jacobs, Skanatra (playing funky, ska versions of Sinatra hits), Grammy-nominee Julio Fernandez, and Maxwell's Swingadelic.
Additionally, karaoke singers can strut their stuff on Friday, June 13 during the Sinatra Idol Contest, which features host Gary Simpson. There will be a prize awarded for the best Sinatra style singer. Contestants must register in advance by calling (201) 420-2207.
Family fun
There is plenty to do for families too including art classes and concerts.
On Sunday, June 8 is Kiddie Palooza at Pier A Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day includes pony rides, face painting, music by Polka Dot, rides and games.
Inspire your future Picasso with free art classes (for toddlers to 6-year-olds) every Monday at Pier A Park from 10 a.m. to noon or Wednesdays at Elysian Park at the same time. Children must be accompanied by guardian. Dress child in clothes that can resist stains. In case of rain, classes will be held at the Multi Center Gym.
In addition, family concerts will be held every Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Shipyard Park.
