The Anna L. Klein Elementary School Student Choir and the U. S. Naval Color Guard will begin the ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Klein School. A special award will presented to Mrs. Carol McGill, American Gold Star Mother of SSG Timothy R. McGill. Sgt. McGill died in Afghanistan on Sept. 21, 2013. Described by his dad, Raymond McGill, as a “gentle giant,” Sgt. McGill was a member of the Marine Corps, and later left the Marines and joined the Army National Guard and the Special Forces, or Green Berets. Parents Raymond and Carol McGill reside in Ramsey, N.J.
During the afternoon ceremonies, students from Anna L. Klein School will learn who are the winners in an essay-writing contest from earlier this season. Guttenberg's Memorial Day celebration will conclude with its annual parade.
The parade includes the Memorial High School Marching Band, several antique cars, military vehicles, and more. The parade begins at 7 p.m. at 68th and Madison, continues through town, and ends at the Monument Park on Boulevard East, with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony.
