Hoboken Arts and Music Festival today (see entertainment section for schedule)

Thousands of visitors, artists, residents, and musicians will gather on Washington Street in Hoboken today (Sunday, Sept. 25) for the annual Fall Hoboken Fall Arts and Music Festival. Admission is free, and the outdoor festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Washington Street from Observer Highway to Seventh Street, rain or shine.

The event’s corporate sponsors are The Hudson Reporter, NY Waterway Ferries, Capital One, Walgreens, PATH and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Pearson Education receives urban tax credit; will bring hundreds of jobs to Hoboken

Pearson Education will be the anchor tenant in a proposed office building to be built on River Street next to the W Hotel, bringing 700 jobs to Hoboken by 2014, according to media reports.

Pearson will be moving from Bergen County. SJP Properties will construct the building.

The Economic Development Authority approved an $82.5 million Urban Transit Hub Tax Credit for Pearson’s move to Hoboken. The tax credit is designed to make transportation-friendly cities more appealing to businesses. However, the credit was recently criticized, as the Panasonic company took advantage of it to leave Secaucus to move to Newark. They had been considering offers to move out of state as well, so the credit kept them in the state. But Secaucus officials are upset that their town is not among the destinations that allow a business to get a credit for moving.

Family Alliance hosts event where parents can find out about local schools

The Hoboken Family Alliance continues its tradition of helping families learn more about school options in Hoboken with the upcoming All Schools Open House. The HFA will host the seventh annual event Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Hoboken High School. HFA has invited representatives from all of the area schools to meet with interested parents from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Last year, over 20 area schools attended, including members from charter and other public schools, enabling parents to meet school representatives and get a sense for their educational options. The event is open to all, free for HFA members, and $10 at the door for non-members.

Mayor Zimmer to walk in fashion event

Get ready to strut your stuff, Hudson County, because the second annual New Jersey Fashion Week will be held at Hoboken’s W Hotel from Oct. 9 to Oct. 13.

The event was founded last year by Donnella Tilery, who was on hand at the W Hotel on Tuesday with sponsors and celebrities, such as famous hair designer and Hoboken native Eric “Alt” Altomare, Chris Nirschel of Next Food Network Star, and Olympic boxer Eric Kelly.

“Alt” reminisced on when he was a child, playing near the waterfront when the now-developed Sinatra Drive had piers and shipyards.

He added that he will also host a runway show on Oct. 9 at 9 p.m. that is “carnival themed” and will have many celebrities taking part in the event.

The events will be held at the W Hotel in Hoboken, 225 River St.

Mayor Dawn Zimmer said that she and some other elected officials will walk the runway during one of the fashion show events.

Ticket sales will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Jersey Affiliate, described on their web site as “the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists.”

New Jersey Fashion Week “provides international designers and trend-setting brands the opportunity to showcase their seasonal collections at upscale venues in the state of New Jersey,” according to a release.

Free High Holiday Services in Hoboken

Chabad Jewish Center of Hoboken will offer free High Holiday Services for Rosh Hashana (Sept. 28-30) and Yom Kippur (Oct. 7-8).

All services will take place at the Boys and Girls Club, 123 Jefferson St., Hoboken (1st floor).

There are no membership fees and Chabad’s services are open to all Jews. Chabad runs a traditional service with a contemporary message in a warm and inclusive atmosphere. Hebrew and English prayer books are provided.

There will be a children’s room with books, games and snacks and a children’s program for part of the service.
