Hoboken Rotary to host fundraiser for Hoboken Charter School fire
The Hoboken Rotary will hold a fundraiser on Tuesday Sept. 18 from 6-9 p.m. at Turtle Club, 936 Park Ave, Hoboken. All proceeds will go directly to Hoboken Charter School in hopes that they can reopen as soon as possible. For additional information or to donate, visit hobokenrotary.org.
Students at the Hoboken Charter School won’t return to school until Tuesday at the earliest, after a fire swept through its top floor on Thursday morning. George Cahn of Cahn Communications of Hoboken said Friday morning that the students were given Friday and Monday off, while school officials work on “assessing potential interim space.”
The fire, on the top floor of 713 Washington St., forced the evacuation of the school on the first day of the new school year. All children and adults were safely escorted out of the building, according to city officials. At least one firefighter suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Hoboken University Medical Center for treatment.
Children from Hoboken Charter School were taken to the Multi Service Center at the corner of Second Street and Grand Street. All Saints relocated their students to St. Nicholas at 527 Clinton St.
“Most importantly, I thank the teachers, our firefighters and police for making sure everyone is safe,” said Mayor Zimmer. “We’ll be working directly with Hoboken Charter to help them through this situation.”
