Father’s Day cards focus on bathroom habits, flatulence

Are men that disgusting?

Each year, aside from the usual Father’s Day cards about fishing, sports, power tools, and grilling, there’s a new theme gaining space – flatulence and poop.

In Hoboken alone last week, the uptown Rite Aid displayed two Father’s Day cards related to “pull my finger” fart jokes, and a card that was actually a book about using the toilet.

CVS also served up some stinky themed greetings with one card saying “How to Pass Gas” on the outside and emitting sound effects when one opened it. A “Family Guy” card said family members had learned the answer to an important question about Dad: “Which way to lean when I fart.” Another fetid Father’s Day card said inside, “Father’s Day Fun? Let it rip!”

Slightly less scatological but perhaps out of date was an Al Bundy card featuring the famous TV father figure with his hand in his pants under the words “TV to watch, burgers to eat, itches to scratch.”

Over at ShopRite, a Family Guy card noted that if you mix up the letters in “Father’s Day” you get “He Farts Day.”

So are women just more dainty about bathroom habits, or are the card makers off base? And is this trend new, or does it go back as far as dad’s hole-filled socks?

American Greetings – the company that is responsible for the three cards at Rite Aid – recently put out a press release saying, “On Father’s Day consumers want to express their love and appreciation for dad in a playful way that is still heartfelt. Achieving this balance requires conversational sentiments that are based on the experiences and memories that have shaped the relationship.”

Ah, Poppa, remember that time during the baseball strike when you ate a hot dog with sauerkraut and stank up Secaucus?

An American Greetings spokeswoman did not return a phone call by press time.
