JERSEY CITY -- Various media outlets reported on Sunday that Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop was encouraging residents to stay off the roads because the city didn't have enough salt to clear secondary streets.

Fulop told the media that the city is using sand and liquid brine to melt the snow, and moving snow to empty lots.

He said the city ordered more salt more than two weeks ago, and expected a shipment Monday. But it wasn't quick enough for all streets.

Meanwhile, the Hudson County freeholders recently said they were going over budget to order more salt, and were investigating claims of price gouging by some merchants. Read Al Sullivan's story about that here.
