Dear Editor:

It is disturbing to see the trend in Union City becoming real-life for people who dwell in apartments. As a community advocate I want to inform you that this process has come about because of the passing of the unplanned and untimely rent control ordinance approved by Mayor Stack and his hand picked candidate, Maryury Bombino at the request of Ms. Wafaa Makail, without thinking of the ramifications of an unjust and unfair ordinance to both the tenants and landlords in our community.

After public meetings and much input from tenants, landlords and community activists such as myself, Mayor Stack went ahead and passed an ordinance which will not allow the owners to go ahead and run their property without losing money each month, thus having no alternative but to go ahead and request permission to convert their properties into condominiums or worse yet file for bankruptcy.

As a candidate for Commissioner and a former member of the Union City Rent Leveling Board for many years, I warned Mayor Stack that his ordinance would be disastrous to all members of our community. As in the past the mayor failed to listen to well-intentioned advice from all parties and passed a terrible ordinance for political reasons only.

The result is now obvious, and many more landlords in our city will have no choice but to go ahead and follow the example been set by your management office.

Sincerely,
Jose G. Falto
