New Jersey hasn’t elected a Republican to represent our state in the US Senate since 1972, and it’s time that came to an end. Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, it’s time to use this historic opportunity to remove a senator who has embarrassed New Jersey and dishonored our highest congressional chamber.
One of the reasons our nation has been so successful is because we have a strong system of checks and balances that is rooted in layered representative government. There was a time when our politicians ran for office, served their constituents, and came back to live under the laws they had created. Public service wasn’t seen as a source for individual gain, and if abused, citizens rightfully demanded that disgraced politicians be removed immediately.
Somewhere along the way, our values have degraded and we have made excuses for inexcusable behavior. As our government has grown its involvement in our lives, we began to distrust each other and let our tribal instincts take over. As a result, we now live in a world where it’s more important that “our side” wins, even if it’s unclear what they will do with the power we have given them.
This, in part, is how we have ended up with a man like Bob Menendez representing us and our values in the United States Senate. He has stolen, has lied, and has bribed his way to favors under the pretense he was above the law. This is the kind of behavior that if allowed to continue, encourages more weak men of questionable character to do the same.
There aren’t enough votes in Bayonne to send Bob Hugin to the Senate, but in a year like this, in times like this, every vote counts. Even if you struggle with our president and don’t identify as a Republican, this race is different. We have the opportunity to send a moderate businessman to the Senate, who will do a far better job of representing New Jersey than Mr. Menendez.
Government exists to most efficiently serve our needs and protect us from each other, as well as threats abroad. New Jersey deserves a senator who recognizes that and doesn’t use the office to play politics. Please join me in supporting Bob Hugin for Senate in this November’s election.
