The Rebuild by Design (RBD) Flood Resistance project is very important to our community. But it needs to be done right, not only for our sake, but for future generations. When the first RBD flood resistance wall was proposed for the backyards of homes on Garden Street, the public and our elected officials rightfully stood up and expressed their opposition. As a result, that wall is being built at a far better location-- one that protects our community without sacrificing our neighborhoods.
We are now faced with a similar issue, for another RBD flood resistance wall -- this one intended to protect the southern edge of Hoboken along Observer Highway. The DEP has been peddling a monstrous 11’ wall, which they call “Option 2”, to the public and city. Building that wall right on Observer Highway would make that part of the city look like East Berlin in the Cold Age. It would completely change the character of Observer Highway and create a desolate space on the southern edge of town.
Luckily, there’s another option, “Option 1” preserves precious light, space and views on Observer Highway by building the wall further back on NJ Transit property. It promises even greater flood resistance and can be built within any necessary time frame too.
And all of our elected officials agree! I want to publicly thank Mayor Bhalla, the whole City Council and Freeholder Romano for their unanimous opposition to the DEPs disastrous Option 2. We must now stand behind them with our complete support of Option 1 being built. That’s sound urban planning and the best outcome for Hoboken.
Please take the time to make your voices heard. Reach out to Governor Murphy’s office, Mayor Bhalla, the DEP, Rebuild By Design and tell them emphatically ‘NO’ East Berlin Wall down Observer Hwy. Tell them ‘NO’ to Option 2 and ‘YES’ to Option 1! WE cannot allow lazy poor urban planning to be forced upon our city. It is simply unacceptable!
