A local wallpaper company recently unrolled plans for a Hoboken-based wallpaper design competition. Artists, interior designers, and Hoboken-lovers alike all have until Dec. 5 to submit ideas to Studio Printworks, a high-end wallpaper company whose print shop is located on Jackson Street.
The winner will receive a cash prize, design royalties, and will be included in the company's fall 2008 collection. The design must be Hoboken-themed, and can involve "iconic Hoboken images, socio-political commentary, historical reference, or simple statements of beauty," according to the contest announcement.
Only in Hoboken
Printworks spokesperson Melissa Capasso said she hoped to see entries from people from different walks of life. "We encourage everyone to participate, anyone who has an idea," she said. Capasso, who serves as assistant to the president at the company's Jackson Street office, has lived in Hoboken for the past six years, and has gotten to know the symbols that have become Hoboken's signature.
"The skyline is definitely an emblem we have here that no one else does," she said. She also mused that people could come up with designs based on the city's nickname, the Mile Square. "I'm sure there are other, more creative ideas," she added.
People haven't actually submitted work, she said, but she has already gotten queries from about 12 people. The competition was announced in flyers handed out during the Hoboken Studio Tour on October 21, said Capasso.
The three-year-old company specializes in toiles, panels with several illustrations that tell narrative stories. All of the work is hand painted and printed on the paper using a process similar to silk-screening. The high end, often edgy-themed wallpaper goes for $80 to $120 per five-yard roll, and is sold in showrooms across the globe.
Capasso said that the company does not have any in-house artists, but has formed relationships with a number of artists and interior designers.
So could the winner of the competition get their own wallpaper line out of the win?
"We definitely don't close off any of our options," Capasso said.
"We are certainly going to see what kind of creative talent there is in Hoboken.
The deadline for the contest is Dec. 5 and the winner will be announced Dec. 14. For more information, and contest guidelines and regulations, go to www.studioprintworks.com. Look under the "Featured Projects" heading.
