The Jewish Community Center of Bayonne’s Sr. Division Floor Hockey League closed out week three with an epic clash as the (3-0) Penguins took on the (2-1) Devils. Over the course of their first three wins, the Penguins have outscored their opponents by a combined margin of 16-3 while the Devils victories have all been tight dog fights with a 5-3 and a 4-3 win. In the early going, the pace was fast as both squads worked the ball from zone to zone. Ten minutes in, the Devils’ Hugh Kiniery put his team up 1-0 with a quick wrist shot off an assist from team captain Mackenzie Woods. Trailing for the first time this season, the Penguins came storming back to take a 2-1 lead as Jake Nowak pumped in his 9 th and 10 th goal of the season with Jan Patrick Egan and Malachi Smith picking up assists. The nose-to-nose donnybrook continued into the final 15 minutes as the Devils’ Colin Woods blasted the game-tying goal with the ever-reliable Mackenzie Woods on the assist. Fueled by their iron-willed comeback, the Devils’ Drew Radil, Jared Radil, and goalie Josh Greenbaum began to box in the Penguins high-octane offense turning the final minutes into a defensive duel. For the Penguins, it was John Bautista, Josh Verzosa, and goalie Matt Doyle who kept the Devils’ sharp shooters at bay. With the clock racing toward overtime, the Penguins’ Alisa Verzosa slid a face off pass to Malachi Smith who zipped in the game-winning dart as the Penguins stayed perfect at 4-0 with a 3-2 victory.
