Over 200 students, spread across 10 teams, performed self-choreographed routines to their own musical selections. The students practice in township recreation teams, some of whom are traveling teams. Those at the event ranged in age from 4 to 15 years old.
Each cheerleader received a participation award after the performances.
This year, a special guest – who is a former NBHS student -- graced the event with her presence. Ashley Gonzalez, a current New York Jets cheerleader, showed her support for the event. She still resides in town.
“She was actually showing the girls that if you work hard, you can achieve whatever goals you have, even in cheerleading,” said Parks and Recreation Commissioner Hugo Cabrera.
Even though many people may not see cheerleading as a sport, “It’s very athletic,” Cabrera said. “It’s incredible what these girls do, when you look at it. They throw each other up in the air.”
