Dear Editor:

I attended a council meeting while working on a Boy Scout Communications merit badge. This badge is one of the many required for scouts striving to become Eagle. One of the requirements of earning the badge was to attend a public council meeting. Another is to write a letter on a subject of my choice to the editor.

At the meeting Mayor Dennis Elwell was correct when he said many boy scouts in Secaucus have become Eagle Scouts. He also said he was very proud of the scouts and the number of Eagles we have in Secaucus. As one of the many boy scouts working toward Eagle, I'd like to thank the town for always supporting scouting in Secaucus. I know that the boys in Troop #22 are also proud of what we do, and we are glad to be in a town that has people and businesses that support scouting.

Beside working on badges or selling popcorn and going camping, boy scouts participate in a lot of town functions. In our uniforms, we proudly represent scouting during ceremonies for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Flag Day and all the other ceremonies and functions the town asks us to participate in. We also work with the American Legion, the VFW and other organizations for events.

The mayor also said the town would be offering an environmental program that scouts (boys and girls) could participate in to help them advance in rank sometime in the future. I'm sure many scouts look forward to learning more about the program when the time comes.
