Dear Editor:

Recent letters in your paper have grossly overstated the cost per pupil of the Hoboken school district and used this misinformation to cast doubt on the quality of our educational program and the administration of the district. I cannot let this stand.

The most thorough and impartial figures come from the New Jersey State Department of Education. This information is readily available to the public and calls into question why anyone would deliberately fabricate false numbers. Search: 2013 NJ Taxpayers Guide to Education Spending.

In 2011-2012 (the most recent years for which numbers are available), Hoboken’s cost per pupil was $19,640. This is certainly comparable to other districts of our size.

For most residents, two questions are paramount: Are the schools improving? And are my tax dollars being spent wisely? The answer to both is yes.

I urge anyone seeking accurate information about the budget or any aspect of our public school system to contact me at leon.gold@hoboken.k12.nj.us.

Sincerely,
Leon Gold, PhD
President, Hoboken Board of Education
