The Jersey City Reporter normally does a good job covering local issues. That’s why I have been surprised lately at some of your coverage of the upcoming mayoral campaign, which seems to be long on anonymous innuendo and short on facts. As a volunteer, I have worked closely with Steve Fulop for the past three years. I have never seen him lie, do somebody wrong, or compromise his values. As a public official and candidate, he deserves scrutiny.
But that needs to be fair scrutiny. I would hope for a higher standard of journalism than solely anonymous sources, or supposed “evidence” which proves to be only another anonymous source. Good stories have facts, not rumors, and you should get the story before you print the story. Shooting first and aiming later doesn’t work in foreign policy, and it doesn’t work in local reporting. I believe that electing Steve Fulop as our Mayor will be a big step forward for Jersey City. He is exactly what he appears to be: honest, hard-working, and committed to the people of Jersey City.
I’m willing to say where I stand and put my name behind it. Your sources should be willing to do the same.
