The newly constituted Hoboken leadership needs to address an urgent need to prohibit sidewalk bicycle use. Bicycle collisions with pedestrians can be fatal with the elderly and toddlers being the most vulnerable. Octogenarians may not walk on a predictable straight line, nor can they always hear warning signals from bicycles that come from behind.
Since bicycles on the sidewalks in Hoboken routinely exceed acceptable speeds, this is an ever increasing hazard. Hoboken is the fourth most densely populated city in the United States. Its less densely populated neighbors of New York, Newark and Jersey City have prohibitions against bike riding on sidewalks. The Hoboken City Council needs to address this issue.
