Memorial Day will be soon upon us. Weehawken’s traditional parade will take place this year on Monday, May 27. In the early seventies the Weehawken Citizens for Peace (WCP) marched in the parade and presented a wreath at the monument. It was always apolitical, no signs, just the WCP banner. Since the invasion of Iraq the WCP has had a presence at this event.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was established to honor the dead of both sides of the Civil War. It continues to be observed to honor the dead of all subsequent wars. We believe that we do no honor to young men and women lost in wars, if we continue to decide every issue on the field of battle, especially in wars undertaken under false premises. Iraq possessed no weapons of mass destruction. We intend to demonstrate our feelings with a silent vigil at the Memorial Day observance in Weehawken. We invite all Weehawken citizens for peace to join us in this endeavor.
