Problems in Hoboken public schools - and why is Jersey City blamed?

This weekend, the Hoboken Reporter had two unusual stories about the Hoboken schools: In one case, there is a gang problem at the Hoboken Charter School, and some are partly blaming it on Jersey City kids who are enrolled. In another story, a man says that his son's elementary school may have sent DYFS after him as revenge for a complaint. The school board election is over and suddenly schools are out of the limelight, but tell us what you think - have you heard about any of the alleged 29 gang incidents involving the Charter School and Demarest kids this year? What can be done? And what are some of the positive things going on in the district? Let us know! Comment below! (To read the stories, go to http://www.hudsonreporter.com/pages/hoboken.)

Calling Maureen Sullivan...you posted 10 times a day on Hoboken 411 during your election...now a real issue comes up and where are you? Please tell us your thoughts here. Hello?

Andy, your point lacks basic logic, no matter how many times you restate dancing around different ways. There's no time to judge the new school board members' performance before the mayoral election, that's the simple fact. Each time you seem to admit that, then double back and try to make the gang incidents in the Charter School (not even overseen by the Hoboken BOE) into an anti-Zimmer point. It just doesn't make sense. It really seems like a case of having drunk some other candidate's 'Koolaid'.

My point Hobo87, is we need to give these new women a chance to understand the issues and then make some statements. Everyone who posted below is saying that Sullivan and co were putting themselves out there to get elected and now that there is real issues being raised they are suddenly silent. Put out a press release w/ NO comment if thats your stance. My tie in to the Zimmer campaign is that they championed the women to the school board and I even voted for them as well because I believe they can change things. Dawn's campaign is running around making the association themselves so the two campaigns are directly tied at this point. Is it a big deal? No because the women havn't done much yet, but I'm saying if things don't turn out as rosy as Dawn's spin campaign makes it out to be maybe you should think hard before you vote for her. I can't help it if I refuse to drink the Koolaid.

I agree a week is too short a time to let them respond if there is no board meeting but Sullivan was on 411 all day long during the campaign and suddenly shes silent when there are real issues reported including the wallace issue if it happened, a bit more important than amadaus, maureen or theresa what are you doing about this?

Most of the gang incidents mentioned in the article in the Reporter involved the The Hoboken Charter School, which of course is not under the Hoboken BOE. Charter schools are publicly funded schools operating under charters, independently of local school boards, hence the name. Per the article some incidents involved (victims at least) from Hoboken's Alternative HS in the Demarest building and the building itself of course belongs to the BOE. So, solutions would involve the BOE, and Hoboken City govt too, but a problem in the Hoboken Charter School isn't actually entirely under either one's control.

But in general for Hoboken BOE issues, if the new school board candidates can't 'say or do' anything about this in a week we should think twice about voting for Zimmer? Who should we be more inclined to vote for for mayor instead based on one week's BOE results, I wonder? That whole point seems to reek of the same ridiculous spin about the mayoral election that the same poster is complaining about elsewhere.

Its extremely frightening and on top of it the police had to cut back on the patrols they were doing in the schools. I don't want to jump all over the school board yet because those women just got in the door. They didn't cause this problem and they need to understand what it is they are dealing with. But and this is huge, if they don't say or do anything before the mayoral election remember this as you think about pushing that button for Zimmer and team. They championed these women so lets see what they can do first.

to answer the question about Jersey City well listen to the news about gangs killing each other in that town for your answer.

The bigger question is where are the very vocal criticial school board candidates now that they are on the board and why are they keeping silent about these issues?

We kept hearing from Maureen Sullivan on every website thur-out the campaign complaining about issues like kids watching amadeus [during a music class...] but meanwhile there are 29 gang incidents in the last 6 months and a father feeling threatened and a principles office ransacked and she is not interested or raising the issue. I guess if its not her kids she doesnt care.

hello is anyone out there or now that your elected it doesnt matter to you/

What is the NEW hoboken board of education diong about these problems? I hope someone steps up to the plate. IT shouldnt fall to a newspaper reporter to bring this to our attention, it should be board members with their priority straight.
