This is in response to the formation of the so-called Weehawken Chamber of Commerce. A true Chamber of Commerce is a good idea, but this organization is nothing but a front for the defeated WIN candidates who ran last May.
A number of merchants, including myself, attended their meeting in December. We raised several questions, including: How did the trustees become trustees without a vote of the full body? Why are they inviting people from outside Weehawken to join? If it is a Weehawken Chamber, it should represent Weehawken business, not other towns. We asked for a copy of the by-laws, but did not receive them.
Since the December meeting we were never contacted. We learned of their first official activity by reading about it in the newspaper. We still have not seen the by-laws. The membership list reads like a "Who's Who" of the WIN political group, headed by defeated candidates Karen Brady and Ben Goldman. I believe that some two-thirds of the members are from the WIN inner circle. Their Post Office Box is 3208, the WIN group's box.
These are the very people who have opposed all development. How can they possibly claim they represent business interests?
Real Chambers of Commerce do not get involved in politics. Their sole purpose is to promote local business. I intend to do that by working with other business people to form a true Weehawken Chamber of Commerce. I urge all Weehawken business people to join with us.
