In response to Angela Pepe's recent letter to Mayor Roberts and the Hoboken Reporter, the citizenry of Hoboken cannot thank you enough for raising this issue - again.
The Hoboken Dog Association reaches out to its membership regularly to remind them of their responsibility as a dog owner and a law abiding citizen that they must pick up after their dog(s). Many of us (dog owner and non dog owner alike) have been appalled over the piles left on our streets, parks and dog runs. There are many of us dog owners that in fact pick up other's irresponsibility out of shear embarrassment and disgust.
We have spoken to the Mayor about this serious health issue and quality of life situation. We have requested a number of initiatives to be undertaken in an effort to clean up our streets, parks and dog runs, one of which at least results in perpetrators being caught and subject to community service to assist the City in the clean up effort.
But they need to be caught. We ask that everyone to pay attention and report areas of regular filth to Environmental Services for clean-up and documentation of those areas. We know it tends to be repeat offenders. And we should be able to recommend to our civil servants what to do and where they need to go to help correct this problem.
The dog population will continue to grow in Hoboken, as it has statistically across the nation in many of our urban and suburban neighborhoods (just look at the number of pet related businesses in Hoboken to serve this thriving community). So we stand with Angela Pepe and all citizens of Hoboken to demand that this Administration enforce the laws on the books and catch these perpetrators and assign them to many multiple hours of dog "poo" pick up - only!

And while regulation is appropriate in certain instances when agreed upon on a consensus basis, we should also look to implement the resources we currently have and enforce the regulations already on the books.
