With large portions and hearty fare, it is sure to satisfy any appetite.
This casual bar and grill is open seven days a week and serves food and drinks for lunch, dinner, and brunch.
The atmosphere
The restaurant, which opened last May, is owned by Mike and Cindy Fasciano. Mike Fasciano is also one of the owners of the successful Margherita's Pizza and Cafe in Hoboken.
Mikie Squared offers the same large portions as Margherita's, but offers a vastly different menu.
It has a comfortable feel of a neighborhood pub with a large bar on one side that spans the room and cozy tables along the wall.
The bar and grill has a lively atmosphere from the crowd of sports lovers that frequent the place and a friendly staff to match it.
Starters
On a recent night, my companion and I started with the fresh mozzarella and tomato salad and the Cajun shrimp quesadillas.
One could almost make a meal out of the mozzarella, which is piled high on the plate. It is made fresh daily by Mike and has a smooth consistency and slightly sweet finish. This is absolutely fabulous!
Also good were the quesadillas that were stuffed with spicy shrimp, roasted peppers, tangy goat cheese, and fresh mozzarella.
Seafood lovers will want to sample the crab cake, which is lightly fried and filled with succulent crab. This appetizer comes over mixed field greens and doesn't need much more than a squeeze of lemon and dab of sauce.
Other appetizers include: calamari, nachos grande, beer battered shrimp, asparagus artichoke dip, wings, chicken fingers and more.
The appetizers are reasonably priced from $6 to $10.
Soups and salads
Next we sampled the spinach salad and the colossal shrimp corn chowder.
The salad is a light, healthy alternative for those watching their weight. It had nice large leafy greens that were sprinkled with cranberries and walnuts. It was dressed with an apple vinaigrette and tasty goat cheese.
We loved the chowder! It was a mouth watering combination of shrimp and corn. This creamy chowder is loaded with flavor. Don't miss this soup!
Other salads include: Caesar salad, buffalo chicken salad, chef salad, and mixed greens. All of the salads can be topped with grilled chicken, shrimp, or steak. The salads are priced from $8 to $12.
Dinner
Next, we tried the buffalo chicken wrap and the BBQ Baby back ribs.
The chicken wrap was a perfect blend of flavors. It had spicy chicken that was wrapped in crisp lettuce, tomatoes, and blue cheese dressing. It was definitely one of the tastiest wraps I've had.
My companion loved the ribs. The meat was tender and seasoned with their slightly sweet BBQ sauce. Diners can choose half or whole rack portions.
Not to be missed is their 8 oz. sirloin steak. The grilled steak was perfectly seasoned and topped with a wild mushroom sherry cream sauce. This savory steak was juicy and didn't require any other condiments.
Other items include: burger, pork and cheese sandwich, chicken and goat cheese sandwich, stuffed chicken breast, pork chops, and more.
All dinners are priced from $9 to $16.
And...
Even though we were stuffed, we just had to try the homemade flan. It did not disappoint with its layer of caramel and creamy consistency.
All of the desserts are made on the premises by Mike.
The restaurant is open for lunch Monday to Friday from 11:30 to 5 p.m. Dinner is served from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday thru Thursday and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition, there are daily drink specials like the all-day Sangria special on Sundays, Martini night on Wednesdays, and Team Trivia on Tuesdays.
All major credit cards are accepted and reservations are recommended for large parties.
Delivery service is available for menu items and private parties.
