When I first decided to run for City Council almost nine months ago, two of the issues most important to me were open space and flooding. I am extremely proud that my efforts have helped bring these important issues to the forefront of the public discussion. I am also proud that my efforts have begun to unify not only the diverse 4th Ward, but also the residents of the entire City.
Last week, I hosted my second Flood Forum, for the purpose of helping the community understand the nature of our problem and learn about some potential solutions. An exciting new and affordable technology was discussed, involving the use of sensors that could help maximize the storage capacity already contained in our current system. The developers of this system offered to come to Hoboken to more fully explain it and to investigate whether their technology could help us here in Hoboken. It is possible that this new system could offer us help quickly and cost effectively while we continue to work on longer-term solutions.
Solving the flooding will involve pursuing several different ideas that complement each other. This technology should be seriously considered, together with the vision of Leed Platinum buildings and a large flood friendly park offered by SW6 and the new ejection pumps being developed by the North Hudson Sewage Authority. These are not ideas that compete with one another. They need to be considered together as pieces of a single puzzle that together can help us solve this problem once and for all.
With respect to Open Space, in part due to my efforts, Hoboken's voters will have an opportunity to vote on November 6 on a proposal to create an Open Space Fund. This Fund would be dedicated exclusively to the acquisition and development of new open space. When he was on the City Council, my opponent Christopher Campos, once voted to put a version of this referendum on the ballot. Since then, he has been silent as to his position on this extremely important matter. As a "leader" interested, as he says, in creating new open space, it is time for him to take a stand. I urge him to join me in supporting the creation of the Open Space Fund. Together, we could help ensure that this very important resolution is passed so that new open space can become a reality.
I look forward to continuing to unify the residents of our City by making the issues important to all of us a first priority.
