
A TOUR OF WEEHAWKEN’S DOWNTOWN – The Weehawken Historical Commission presented a walking tour of The Shades, the downtown part of Weehawken, on Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. Members Willie Demontreux and Lauren Sherman took participants to the view old first schools, early churches, and even Weehawken’s original town hall.
Officer shot himself in the hand by accident
Michael DeBari, a Weehawken police officer of 12 years, shot himself in the hand by accident on Tuesday morning. DeBari was at police headquarters when the incident occurred. “The bullet went through his left palm below his fingers,” said Director of Public Safety Jeff Welz last week, who added that the bullet then hit the wall. “It did some damage [to his hand] and there are some bone fractures. He had surgery and is in stable condition. We’re hopeful he’s going to make a full recovery.”
Debari, a veteran of the Marines, was taken to Hackensack Medical Center
An investigation will be made by Weehawken police. “Our goal is to make sure this will never happen again,” said Welz. “He’s an officer that has had extensive training. That’s why we’re looking at the possibility that there was a malfunction of the weapon.
Thanksgiving food drive
The Weehawken Cub and Boys Scouts will be at Pathmark this weekend Saturday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. asking for shoppers to buy one extra item for donation to the Weehawken food pantry run by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Thanksgiving party held Saturday
The Township Council has invited all seniors to join them at a Thanksgiving luncheon party on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the community room located at 525 Gregory Ave. at noon. Weehawken musician won international award
David Little, featured in a Hudson Reporter story a few weeks ago, won the Digital Compo-in-Residence competition that was hosted by Dilettante Music, an online music company in London England. A concern event took place on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time at Wilton’s Music Hall in London England. David’s father, Joe Little, was excited about his son winning the competition and thanked all those who voted online for David.
Weehawken 150th Anniversary Gala
The public is invited to a major event: The Weehawken Anniversary Gala, which will be held Friday, Dec. 4 at the Venetian in Garfield, N.J. Tickets are now on sale.
The elegant evening will begin with cocktails at 7:30 p.m. and a dinner to follow. Black tie is optional. Tickets are $150, which entitles the holder to participate in a drawing of “exceptional” gifts.
