The Jersey City Artists’ Studio Tour will take place Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2 from noon to 6 p.m. It’s a two-day walking tour of artists’ studios, group exhibitions, and art in public spaces.

The Jersey City Artists Studio Tour is presented and sponsored by Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, The Jersey City Municipal Council, Division of Cultural Affairs, Pro Arts, the Hudson Reporter, and other corporate sponsors.

Pro Arts, the Jersey City Division of Cultural Affairs, and corporate sponsors have presented the annual event since 1994. Attracting more than 2,000 visitors every year, it is the main cultural event of the October Is Art Month celebration.

WomenRising’s new home

On Thursday WomenRising and Bergen Communities United held the grand opening of its new job and resource bank at 169 Monticello Ave. in Jersey City. The program had previously been housed in a much smaller space. According to program staff, the focus of the WomenRising/BCU effort is to create a mechanism through which local employers and jobseekers can easily connect.

A nonprofit advocacy and job training organization, WomenRising helps low-income women become economically independent.

The organization’s new, larger space gives the program greater visibility in the community and offers better access for residents.

So many cats, they’re practically giving them away!

Companion Animal Trust will host a special cat adoption event in the Jersey City Heights on Sunday, Sept. 18 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Pershing Field Community House, 201 Central Ave.

Adoption fees have been reduced to $60 from the usual $100. All the felines have already been spayed/neutered and have been vaccinated.

Suicide prevention walk

I n the U.S., a person dies every 15 minutes, on average, and each year more than 34,000 people in this country die by suicide.

On Sunday, Oct. 23 people from across Hudson County will participate in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk to prevent suicide in Jersey City. The walk benefits the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The walk will begin on the pier at Exchange Place.

Upcoming flea markets

St. Anne’s will host two flea markers before the end of the year at 255 Congress St.

The first will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The second will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3, also from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Three libraries restore Sat. hours for fall/winter season

The Jersey City Free Public Library has revised its operating hours for the 2011-2012 fall/winter season. Starting Saturday, Oct. 1, three library branches will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The three branches that will be open at these hours on Saturdays are the Main Library, Five Corners and Greenville libraries. All other branches in the Jersey City library system will be closed on Saturdays.

The three locations that will be open on Saturdays encompass several large communities within Jersey City, collectively covering downtown, the eastern part of the city, the Jersey City Heights, and the southern portion of the city.

Over the last four years, severe budget reductions to the library system have resulted in shorted hours and other cutbacks at local branches in the city.
