North Bergen Recreation opens next week
North Bergen Recreation will have its opening day Saturday, April 14, for softball and baseball.
Little League opening day will be Saturday at 12 p.m. at the 76th Street field. The games will commence following a parade. Girls’ softball will begin at 2 p.m. at the 64th Street field.
NJ man passes away following North Bergen hit-and-run
A Butler man was pronounced dead at 4:33 p.m. Sunday, April 1, following injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run on Tonnelle Avenue on March 23 at 11:45 p.m, according to North Bergen Police Detective Frank Mena.
Omar Monroig, 42, was struck by a “dark-colored” vehicle while crossing the street with another man to visit a restaurant and lounge on Tonnelle Avenue. Monroig was struck by the vehicle and carried roughly 110 feet northbound before coming to a stop in the road, police said. The two men were possibly intending to celebrate Monroig’s birthday, which occurred two days prior to the accident.
North Bergen Library celebrates National Library Week
The North Bergen Free Public Library, 8411 Bergenline Ave., will hold several events in honor of National Library Week (April 8 to the 14). During the week, the library will waive fines for overdue books.
“The Lizard Guys” will introduce children to the world of exotic animals on Thursday, April 12 at 4 p.m.
The “Reading Rocks Magic Show,” a unique mix of stage magic, comedy, and audience participation, will be held Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. The event will also showcase popular children’s literature.
Bill Pettek, a “comedy hypnotist,” will perform a show for adults on Saturday, April 14 at 5 p.m. Admission is free.
Guttenberg parade scheduled, seeking marchers
The Guttenberg Parade Committee is seeking marchers for their parade scheduled for Wednesday, May 30 at 7 p.m. Lineup for the parade will be at 6:30 p.m. at 68 St. and Madison Avenue.
The parade will honor the active-duty soldiers and veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
