Dear Editor: Bravo for "Publius" for speaking out against the anachronism that is rent control in Hoboken today. The spectacle of city councilmembers falling over one another, appearing more pro-tenant, is a classic example of a pressure group intimidating the citizenry into maintaining an entitlement available to a select few. Who conferred a right on these privileged few to benefit at the expense of their neighbors? The assessed value for controlled housing is lower because rent control suppresses values; the remaining taxpayers are required to make up the difference. Property values in general are depressed when landlords don't upgrade housing because an acceptable return is not available. Every homeowner is affected when property values are impaired. As a single-family homeowner, I resent the exorbitantly high property taxes levied by the city and school district. These taxes are a direct result of inefficient government. I do not see the city council showing nearly as much concern for the plight of homeowners. What has the council done for those residents who are forced to sell because the city can't manage its fiscal affairs properly? I challenge the mayor and city council to speak out for the interests of the majority, the market rate tenants and homeowners. Repeal the rent control laws. Let the activists petition for a referendum. Allow the citizens to voice their true opinions. Name withheld
