Dear Editor:

I am asking area residents to help the residents of the Dominican Republic who have recently suffered countless losses due to weather-related emergencies. Torrential rains lashing the northern part of the country have created heavy flooding on the island, leaving thousands of people without basic necessities.

Union City is home to many, many Dominicans who are distraught over the devastation in their homeland. They have come to me, asking me to assist them and I have agreed to do so. There are many items the public can donate to help.

Items needed include: dried milk and other dried items (juice, fruit, etc.); bottle water; shoes; clothing, including infant's clothing; dried and preserved meat, such as sausages; canned or dry beans; rice; folding beds/cots; air mattresses; bedding and other linens and medications such as eletrolyte solution, antibiotics, disinfectants, aspirin, hydrogen peroxide, vitamins, disposable diapers (including adult size), anti-diarrheal.

Items may be dropped at my office, 3715 Palisade Ave., Third Floor, Union City, (201-348-5755) -- office hours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Mayor Brian P. Stack
