Uptown Pizzeria, 54 14th St., has specialty pizza, sandwiches, and more for those days and nights you just don't want to cook. Even better is their extended delivery hours during the week and on weekends when the only effort you want to make is answering the door.
The pizzeria, open since 2003, primarily operates as a take-out facility except during warm weather when the outdoor café is open.
Everything is made fresh on the premises including the pizza, sandwiches, salads, and dinners. Not only are the portions filling, service is fast.
Their regular cheese pie ($14.25) is made with a slightly sweet red sauce, spices, cheese. It is topped with a round slice of fresh mozzarella. The crust is thin, yet not so thin that it falls apart.
The slice ($2.25) holds the cheese, unlike other inferior slices that lose the cheese after a few bites. There are many toppings to choose from including: extra cheese, pepperoni, sausage, bell peppers, hot peppers, meatballs, roasted garlic, portabella mushrooms, olives, eggplant, broccoli, chicken, artichoke hearts, onions, anchovies, spinach and fresh tomato.
In addition to the regular cheese is the Sicilian or white varieties.
One of the specialty pies is the Margherita pizza, which is loaded with fresh mozzarella, fresh plum tomatoes and fresh basil. This tasty blend is mild enough for those who don't like a lot of spice.
It also comes by the slice for those that want to sample many different kinds.
On the spicier side is the Tex Mex version. The sauce is mixed with chopped meat, chili spices and cheese, and jalapenos. This delicious mix will get your heart racing!
Other special pies include: grilled chicken, peppers, and onions; a veggie pizza; baked ziti pie; spinach and tomato; broccoli and tomato; pepperoni and mushrooms; a Hawaiian pizza; and BBQ chicken with onions.
They also have specialty chicken pizzas with tomato, broccoli, ricotta, or mushrooms. The specialty pies are priced from $17.75 to $21.
Salads and sandwiches
Those looking for something in the low-calorie department will be pleased to know that they have salads and sandwiches. On the day I was there, I tried the house salad topped with grilled chicken.
The large salad of mixed greens comes with slices of tomato, cucumbers, red onion, carrots, and artichoke hearts. It comes topped with pitted, marinated olives and your choice of dressing.
The salad, which was made in front of me, was crisp, cold and satisfying. There were ample pieces of seasoned grilled chicken breast that were a meal in itself.
Other salads include: Caesar, antipasto, and a mozzarella with tomatoes and roasted peppers. They are priced from $5 to $8. Add $3 for grilled or fried chicken.
All the cold sandwiches, which are priced from $5.50 to $7.50 are topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and oil & vinegar.
The cold cuts are literally piled high on the fresh Italian bread. Cold sandwiches include: turkey, chicken cutlet, roast beef, grilled chicken, Italian sub, ham and provolone, salami and provolone, vegetable and eggplant and buffalo chicken.
There are hot varieties as well including: chicken parmesan; meatball; sausage, peppers, and onions; shrimp parmesan; eggplant parmesan and more. The large sandwiches are a bargain at $6 to $7.50.
Uptown also serves traditional pasta dishes, full dinners, sides of meat, and calzones. They also have mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers, fried ravioli, calamari, garlic bread, and French fries.
