There were cheers, as well as some tears, from preschoolers in Union City and West New York, who were leaving their moms and dads for the first time. However, they were able to go into the loving and caring arms of their new teachers and school officials on their first day of school last Thursday, Sept. 6.

Both Union City and West New York began the school day with the official opening of their new schools.

Union City had proud parents wandering the halls of the Early Childhood Center past the late bell to make sure their little ones were okay, while in West New York children strolled into the new No. 4 School on their own or holding the hand of a close friend as they walked to class.

West New York's No. 4 students even had their own impromptu ribbon cutting surrounded by their families and school officials. Cutting the ribbon was fifth grader Jason Rivero and sixth grader Alex Petanco.

"I think it's great and I'm hoping to have a wonderful year in fifth grade," said Jason, 10.

"It's cool and I hope I pass this year," said Alex, 12.

So far the year is off to a good start. Good luck everybody!
