Born in Hoboken, Captain Indri was raised in West New York and has lived in the town ever since. A graduate of the town's Memorial High School, he became a member of the United States Navy for six years, 1978-1984, where he graduated with an Electronics/Electricians Diploma Certificate. Captain Indri also tells us that he went to work in the family liquor store business of his father Elso in Guttenberg. Meanwhile, his loving father was also a West New York fireman for 25 years. His father and lovely mother Margaret are now both retired and living the Poconos in Pennsylvania and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary!
Captain Indri further tells us that he has a brother Alec, who is a fireman for the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department, whose base office is located in Weehawken but also covers the municipalities of West New York, Guttenberg, North Bergen and Union City. Moreover, Captain Indri has a sister, Elise, who is a "dog groomer" by trade in Manhattan, and currently lives in Bergen County. Captain Indri goes on to tell us that unlike his father and brother as firemen, he decided to take the Police Officer's Test in 1986 and passed it! He progressed to the rank of "lieutenant" and held the title for approximately 10 years and thus recently was promoted to the coveted rank of "captain."
As for his family, Captain Indri proudly tells us that he and his lovely wife Lori celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary just two weeks ago, and they have three wonderful daughters named Danielle, Cassandra and Kristine.
However, during this interview, this columnist wanted to backtrack and asked Captain Indri why he chose to become a policeman rather than a fireman like his father and brother! Thoughtfully, he answered, that he wanted to help and protect people, but in a different way than his father and brother. Thus, as a policeman, he believes that he made the right choice!
However, Captain Indri's feelings on wanting to help and protect people as a policeman have also carried over into sports! He became a close friend of fellow West New Yorker Christopher Roche, internet sports columnist for Brick City Boxing.com, and he came to want to bestow "dignity" on retired pugilists in need, to show them that they are not forgotten! Thus, Captain Indri has become a vice president and East Coast Director of the Retired Boxers Foundation, founded by Alex "The Bronx Bomber" Ramos, in Simi Valley, Calif. Captain Indri tells us that the foundation is a "non-profit" organization that helps prize fighters in need. They raise money for their living expenses, medical bills and food bills, for all boxers down on their luck!
Captain Indri, who has been involved with the foundation for 10 years, is also involved with their "comedy club/autograph signings," which also help raise funds for the organization! Furthermore, Captain Indri is a member of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame and a member of the Boxing Writer's Association of America as a reporter for a northern New Jersey weekly newspaper. Captain Indri declares that the only sport he really has an interest is in boxing as he truly loves the sport. However he does admit to watching baseball and football on television, in leisure downtime.
As per his police profession, he is a member of the Italian-American Police Society and is also a member of the American Legion, harking back to his days in the Armed Forces! When asked about his early days in the Police Department regarding patrol duties, he becomes "self-effacing," but when pressed, he admits to receiving several citations during the course of his Patrol Division duties in the past.
Getting back to boxing, Captain Indri tells of his pleasure in meeting such boxing greats as Heavyweight Champions Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson and former New Jersey State Champion Charles "Chuck" Wepner of Bayonne, the "real" Rocky of Hollywood fame! Other greats that he has met are Lou Savarese, Arturo Gatti, Michey Ward and the great former Heavyweight Champion Evander Holyfield!
Thus, on a day-to-day basis, how does Captain Indri feel about his profession and life in general? Well, he tells us that he wakes up every day looking to see what must be done for his local society and looking to do the job well and to "do good" for others! He considers himself "lucky in life" with a lovely wife, daughters, police career with which he helps people every day, and has his loving parents, too. He feels "Blessed by God" and feels that he is in a "good place " in his life and wants to continue to make positive things happen in his professional and personal life. With an attitude like that, only "good things" can continue to come forward to you, Captain Indri. All the best in your future!!...
Guttenberg' Athletic Living Legend Brian Guaschino tells us that he is astrologically a Leo and that his son Thomas, who is a North Bergen High School up and coming athlete in his own right, is also a Leo. Another Guttenberg living legend to follow in his father's footsteps. The Apple doesn't fall far from the tree!!...
United States Army Private Arturo Marin, brother of Johanna Marin of North Bergen, has recently completed Basic Training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina. Congratulations!...
For those who wish to know the Reverend Francisco Legarra, O.A.R, who is the Pastor of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Union City, hails from the hometown of Pamplona, in Spain, where the legendary "Running of the Bulls" is celebrated every year. The Holy Family Parish just recently celebrated its 150th Year Jubilee, and may the Parish celebrate many, many more jubilees!!...
Legendary former Secaucus Mayor Paul Amico tells us that as of this column writing, he will be celebrating his 95th birthday and is in "good health" as well. Mayor Amico, congratulations, and many Happy Returns of Your Day!!..
Readers, according to a recent published report, retired New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Marie Garibaldi and consulting executive Richard J. Wolff, who are both Weehawken residents, are also both members of the Order of Malta! For those readers who wanted to know more about the organization I dug into the organization's website as well as other Internet sources and came up with this bit of information and history! The Order has had many names over its 900 year history; thus, the best name to give the reader a seemingly good idea of its heritage is to call them The Sovereign Military Order of the Knights and Dames of Malta, of which is now located in Rome, Italy! They are the Fourth Oldest Religious Order of the Roman Catholic Church, with allegiance to the Pope, presently Pope Benedict XVI. Furthermore many members have lineage to aristocracy in general, according to these sources. The Order performs "charitable works" on a global scale. The 79th Grand Master of The Order is an Englishman named Matthew Festing, who is called "Fra' Matthew" within the Order. Quite fascinating reading! For those readers who "surf the Internet" check it out. And so it goes...until next time...see you around town..."Matt"...
