Dear Editor:

I am writing to say "Thank You" to all those who participated in and contributed to the 2008 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Even in times of a slow economy there are many wonderful people in our community who contributed to this worthy cause. I would first like to thank the men and women of the North Bergen Police Department under the command of Chief William F. Galvin, Jr. These fine individuals collected a total of $10,000.00 in donations for New Jersey Special Olympics this year.

I am especially thankful to Mayor Nicholas Sacco, Schools Superintendent Robert Dandorph and Detective Enrique Marrero for their leadership in raising donations in conjunction with the North Bergen Schools. Faculty and staff contributed over $2,400.00 to this great cause. Police Officer Frank Mena also deserves to be commended for personally raising close to $1,000.00

There is a long list of donors, too many to thank personally in this letter; however two men and their companies were especially generous. Thank you to Mr. Stephen Guido of Westside Transload and Mr. Howard McPherson of Champion Construction. These are good natured individuals who opened their philanthropic hearts (and check books), each giving large donations to this important cause.

Lastly I would like to congratulate all the runners for a job well done and give special recognition to the following members of the North Bergen Police Department who after completing the North Bergen portion of the Torch Run chose to continue running and complete the entire length of the North Hudson Run: Lt. Randy Homer, P.O. Cynthia Vargas, P.O. Thomas Yfantis, P.O. Anthony Caramucci, P.O. George Finkeldey and P.O. Santos Benetiz.

This fourteen (14) plus mile trek began in North Bergen, ran through Guttenberg, West New York, Union City, Jersey City, Kearny and ended in Newark.

It is acts of kindness, community involvement and charity like NJ Special Olympics that make me proud to be a member of the North Bergen Police Department.

Very truly yours,
Captain Robert Dowd
North Bergen Police Department
