Memorial Day was a deadly day in Jersey City as two shooting deaths occurred within a 24-hour period.

According to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio, Marion R. Ortiz, 23, was fatally shot in the head around 12:30 a.m. Monday morning near the corner of Grant and Rose avenues. DeFazio said Ortiz had been living on Grant Avenue with his girlfriend at the time of the shooting. Ortiz was shot in the head at least once with a semi-automatic pistol.

An autopsy on Ortiz's body was scheduled for Tuesday. DeFazio also said the motive does not appear to be robbery, and may have been connected to a previous dispute in which was Ortiz was involved. The investigation is ongoing.

In addition, late Monday night, Kareem Hilliard, 27, was shot and killed on Fulton Avenue.

DeFazio said numerous shots were fired and Hilliard sustained one gunshot to the chest. DeFazio said pronounced dead at the Jersey City Medical Center at approximately 11:30 p.m. DeFazio said Hilliard was from Bidwell Avenue in Jersey City.

DeFazio said no motive has been established, although it does appear to be robbery.

DeFazio said both the Jersey City Police Department and Hudson County Prosecutor’s Off ice are still investigating both incidents.
