There is some debate about the final numbers in the Hoboken mayoral election, but City Clerk James Farina said this afternoon at 2 p.m. that the tally is Peter Cammarano, 6,188 (including 542 absentee votes, 82 provisional) and Dawn Zimmer, 6,027 (162 absentee, 36 provisional.)
However, opponent Dawn Zimmer’s team said Friday that they are considering whether to raise a legal challenge, and have not conceded as of yet.
The top council vote-getters were Dawn Zimmer’s team of Ravi Bhalla, Carol Marsh, and David Mello. Fourth-place finisher Vincent Addeo just missed a seat by 80 votes. He got 5,560, behind Mello, who amassed 5,640.
This means that if Cammarano becomes mayor on July 1, he may face a hostile council, which will also include Zimmer, who remains as 4th Ward councilwoman.
Zimmer sent a new letter today for this weekend’s paper:
To the editor,
I write to thank Hoboken voters for all of their support, encouragement and great ideas over the course of my campaign. I also wish to thank the hundreds of concerned residents who volunteered so much of their time to help change Hoboken.
The success of my Council slate, Carol Marsh, Ravi Bhalla and David Mello means there will be a majority on the City Council committed to making the fundamental changes Hoboken needs.
Our campaign stood up against outside money and development interests and well-organized interest groups, and we more than held our own. I am ahead of Mr. Cammarano among the well over 11,000 people that voted at the polls by machine on Tuesday. Mr. Cammarano is ahead over-all based on the absentee ballots- a large number of which were defective on their face and already thrown out. The large number of absentee ballots collected by a select few individuals raises significant concerns.
I ask for everyone's patience as I think about what is the best course of action.
I will keep everybody updated as new developments unfold. Thanks again for all of your support.
Thank you.
Dawn Zimmer
4th Ward Councilwoman & Mayoral Candidate
