HOBOKEN – Just a few days after (now former) Public Safety Director Angel Alicea resigned after telling Mayor Dawn Zimmer he met twice with FBI informant and disguised developer Solomon Dwek in 2009, Zimmer is looking to fill the vacant position. So, if you feel qualified, shoot your resume to City Hall.

Dwek’s 2009 undercover work with the FBI and the U.S. District Attorney brought down former Mayor Peter Cammarano, who is now behind bars serving a two year sentence for accepting a $25,000 donation from the disguised developer. Alicea was a council candidate on Cammarano’s 2009 slate, was hired as public safety director after he lost, and stayed on as director after Zimmer took over. His salary was $27,000.

The release of the book “The Jersey Sting” by Josh Margolin and Ted Sherman revived the discussion, when it was revealed that Councilman Michael Russo in 2009 met with Dwek. The shock carried over to last week’s council meeting, when members of the public both blasted and supported Russo (click HERE to see the coverage of the meeting).

However, some members of the public called out Alicea, after it was reported previously that he may have met with Dwek.

Late on Friday, Zimmer’s administration published a press release indicating that Alicea had resigned after disclosing to the mayor that he met with Dwek twice. Zimmer also called for the release of all “tapes, recordings, transcripts, and other documents” related to the investigation involving “Hoboken public officials, their close associates, and family members.”Zimmer submitted a corresponding Freedom of Information Act to the Department of Justice.

Operation Bid Rig is considered an ongoing investigation. -- Ray Smith

The only reason to "come down" on Jake Stuiver would be if he was covering up for some impropriety by Mason during her meeting with Dwek. It is surely true that if Stuiver was still a Mason supporter his account would carry less weight with many. The fact that he is now no friend of Mason is the eason his account carries so much weight, and Mason should be glad it does.

It is Jake Stuiver's word that Mason is relying on to avoid the stigma that she has so cavalierly attached to others. In the absence of Jake's account, mason would have no more credibility than Russo before the book and tapes came out or Alicea now.

And...if Jake Stiver were still with Mason and not Zimmer, DancingRudy would be coming down hard on him instead of giving him the benefit of the doubt. Hypocricy at its finest.

Hoboken deserves better.

Didn't miss a thing, Bart. The JJ story makes an unsubstantiated claim based on anonymous "sources." No other news outlet made this assertion and unless the "sources" were Alicea, his lawyer or the DOJ, it is unlikely the sources had credible first hand information. They were likely Hudson County political hacks reporting what they "heard." This barely rises above the level of a rumor. This is not exactly the equivalent of an FBI surveillance tape. As for Mason, while I would personally be surprised if she did anything wrong, we plain and simply do not know though Jake Stuiver's account carries much weight with many. Mason, like Alicea,is entitled to the complete benefit of the doubt until credible information to the contrary comes to light.

DancingRudy must have missed the Jersey Journal stories that specifically mentioned Angel Alicea was the unnamed candidate who agreed to accept $5,000 from Dwek that former Hudson County Board of Elections investigator Dennis Jaslow referred to in a Federal Courtroom. Alicea's name wasn't mentioned because during the plea hearing because the FBI wasn't done with him yet. From the Jersey:

Hoboken Public Safety Director Angel Alicea has stepped down after finally admitting to the city's administration that in 2009 he met twice with Solomon Dwek, the informant who bribed dozens of public officials and candidates in the Operation Bid Rig III corruption sting.

In a statement Friday afternoon, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said Alicea "and I mutually agreed today that in light of Hoboken's recent history and the fact that he had failed to disclose this information either publicly or to me, he could no longer serve effectively in his position as Public Safety Director."

The admission should not have come as a surprise to Zimmer, since The Jersey Journal, in September 2009, reported twice that Alicea met with Dwek.

The Jersey Journal also reported in September 2009 that Alicea was the unnamed candidate who agreed to accept $5,000 from Dwek that former Hudson County Board of Elections investigator Dennis Jaslow referred said in a plea hearing.

it is you who mislead and misread. your argument makes no sense. yes they mentioned russo's lunch with dwek and didn't rehash the entire lunch, probably because they have written it at least 10 times (and other news sources and blogs have written more) so maybe they assume we know by now. doesnt mean they equated anything. bark up a different tree

Dusty - I provided the full quote in context. Pulling out one sentence while pretending the balance doesn't exist is a pretty lame argument. Any article that describes the book's revelation as being nothing more than the fact that Russo met with Dwek is not neutral - its misleading. Alicea met with Dwek as did Beth Mason. Neither was arrested and we have no independent way of knowing whether they behaved properly or not. Until evidence comes out to the contrary, I prefer to believe that neither Alicea nor Mason did anything wrong. Russo's misbehavior is there for all of us on the surveilance tape, so he no longer gets the benefit of the doubt that we should properly afford to Mason and Alicea.

It doesn't "equate" anything. Ray Smith's exact words are:

"The release of the book “The Jersey Sting” by Josh Margolin and Ted Sherman REVIVED THE DISCUSSION."

This is the worst case of reading into something I have ever seen. Is Zimmer paying her bloggers enough to feel like you have to try to discredit every instance of neutral reporting so that people will only read exclusively pro-zimmer blogs? The Alicea issue obviously came to light last week because of everything that happened with the book's release calling out Russo. You believe it's a coincidence? Get real.

Any and all questions can be addressed to the two Pulitzer award winning authors.

Here's where it equates them - for those who pretend they can't read:

"The release of the book “The Jersey Sting” by Josh Margolin and Ted Sherman revived the discussion, when it was revealed that Councilman Michael Russo in 2009 met with Dwek. The shock carried over to last week’s council meeting, when members of the public both blasted and supported Russo (click HERE to see the coverage of the meeting).

However, some members of the public called out Alicea, after it was reported previously that he may have met with Dwek."

The book, supported by the videotapes, says Russo agreed to accept a bribe. The story falsely implies that the book only says Russomet with Dwek and equates that to Alicea. This is bad, misleading journalism and Ray Smith knows better than that. Sadly,it looks like he's being forced to sacrifice his journalistic integrity at the alter of his bosses'nefarious political agenda.

Where do they imply the situations were comparable?

Dawn is the one who announced the resignation.

The issue with Russo wasn't that he met with Dwek, its what the surveilance tapes show happened at the meeting. Implying that the Russo and Alicea situations are comparable since they both met with Dwek is an odd editorial choice. We have no idea what happenned at Alicea's meeting, or Mason's meeting for that matter, but we do know what happenned at Russo's meeting and it stinks to high heaven. If videotape of Mason or Alicea comes out and shows that they behaved like Mike, then by all means compare them. But till then, how about a little genuine perspective and journalistic honesty?
