HOBOKEN and BEYOND-- Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer has apparently declared war on the Hudson County Democratic Organization, the longtime political organization in Hudson County. After Councilman Ravinder Bhalla, an ally of Zimmer, decided to run for Assembly in the Democratic primary this June against two HCDO candidates, Zimmer issued a statement Wednesday morning claiming she received an "extremely troubling call from Union City Mayor Brian Stack."

Zimmer said that yesterday's story on the PolitickerNJ website suggests that Stack had established a "back-room deal" with Mayor Mark Smith of Bayonne to put together a slate of incumbent Assemblyman Ruben J. Ramos Jr. and Jersey City Detective and School Board Member Sean Connors for the June primary. Bhalla was not included in the HCDO slate, and is running independently. Stack has, in the past, been on the outs with the HCDO, but apparently declared a truce in deciding on state legislative candidates this year. Zimmer and her allies, who are in charge of Hoboken's Democratic party, say their own suggestions were slighted during these HCDO/Stack talks.

"Yesterday, I received an extremely troubling telephone call from Union City Mayor Brian Stack, who is also Hoboken's State Senator," Zimmer said in a statement released on Wednesday morning. "Senator/Mayor Stack, who over the past year has almost never returned my phone calls relating to important governmental matters like our hospital, was calling to threaten me politically."

Zimmer said that it is an attempt "to try to turn over the Hoboken Democratic Party to the Russo family." Councilman Michael Russo, a political opponent of Zimmer, is running for City Council in Hoboken against Zimmer's choice, Greg Lincoln.

"It is ironic, that as the only woman among Hudson County's 12 mayors, the leaders of our county party have elected not to give me the respect that has always been accorded by the party to Hudson County mayors," Zimmer said. "I don't know whether my gender was a factor in Mayor Stack and Chairman Smith's decision to treat me differently than other mayors have always been treated, but their behavior has been both odd and disconcerting, to say the least."

The Reporter has reached out to Stack's office, and will post a follow up story. -- Ray Smith and Al Sullivan

Read the article at this link and you'll see that this was all about Stack cutting a deal with the HCDO to endorse the Russo committee slate so it has everything to do with the Russos

The letter signed by Michelle Russo is pretty compelling evidence - don't you think?

What does any of this have to do with Russo? Zimmer is the first one to bring up 'the Russos' and I don't see any evidence.

Second, how come Dawn never complained about Stack's deeds before this. The nj politics story says that Dawn actually wanted to have influence over the hdco choices. Only when her and bhallas suggestions were denied did they get angry. So this doesnt seem as brave as the first line makes it seem.

Before y'all attack me for siding against Dawn, I am not, I think these are legitimate questions though for those of us who dont know all the background here.

Once again The Machine rears its head and this time sucks up the Russo's as its agent in Hoboken. Heaven help us these people are the worst.

Mayor Zimmer standing up to the bosses is a good sign. Hoboken needs to assert its independence and clearly the designs from others like Brian Stack.

Stay out Stack!

It's hard to believe a guy like Stack would have anything to gain by aligning himself with the Russos. I guess in the world of political hacks getting caught doing bad things on an FBI tape but escaping prosecution actually increases one's stature. Of course, if it turns out that Russo escaped prosecution by becoming a cooperating witness that would be considered real wrongdoing. Crooks are easily forgiven Rats - never!

This is getting a little scary but clearly Russo and many of the other HCDO corrupt politicos are getting scared. The long running power machine has had a wrench thrown in the gears. All out war will not benefit anyone but maybe things need to crumble before they can be rebuilt.

On second thought, we (being the majority of residents--tenants) may end up with a much nicer (more hospitable) Hoboken by keeping Russo, Castellano, and the machine in place. There's a fixed price, (the graft part), but at least we get some protection (and attention).

I'd say it's a toss up at this point.

I'm not the biggest fan of Dawn Zimmer's (I think she could smile more; be a bit more personable, and not obsess about parks and bicycling while ignoring the evil doings of some major wealth-obsessed landlords who really should go down in the annals of the scumbags of Hudson County (read the court files on what they do to get tenants out and evade rent control), BUT, Ms. Zimmer is so much better than the Russo Hudson County Machine. Honesty counts!!!!! Please vote for Greg Lincoln, and the rest of Ms. Zimmer's team!
