BAYONNE – A contractor digging on property on East 17th Street near Avenue E uncovered a grenade on Wednesday, according to Deputy Police Chief Ralph Scianni. The houses around the building were evacuated, and the Jersey City Bomb Squad was brought to the site to remove the explosive.

It has not yet been determined if the grenade capable of detonating. Scianni said the Bayonne Police K-9 unit with its bomb-sniffing dogs was being brought in to sniff out possible other explosives in the area.
