Who does Councilman Occhipinti really represent?

Dear Editor:

I am writing in response to the glowingly self-congratulatory letter last week from Fourth Ward Councilman Timothy Occhipinti. Mr. Occhipinti is always quick to itemize very real, laudable accomplishments, very few if any are his for which to claim credit. I wish to offer a different perspective on Mr. Occhipinti’s “service” to the ward.

For the past 16 months, our ward has endured what can only by the most generously loose definition pass for representation by someone who has proven to be a developer shill and corruption apologist.

The interests of our neighborhood’s people have languished under Mr. Occhipinti’s tenure as our councilman in virtually every way, whether through his attempted sabotage of the hospital that serves and employs so many Fourth Ward residents, ridiculing the new flood-pump technology that has so palpably alleviated a long-standing problem for our neighborhood, or his transparent and sophomoric attempts to co-opt credit for the accomplishments of Mayor Zimmer, Director Pellegrini and the rest of her administration.

But despite the low bar our councilman has set, I was stunned to learn of his blatantly selling out the public trust.

On March 20, Mr. Occhipinti took the highly unorthodox step of attempting to testify before the Zoning Board in a variance hearing – for a developer who had gotten into hot water by constructing a restaurant facility on land the city has flagged to be part of a new southwest park.

The fact that Mr. Occhipinti either didn’t know or didn’t care that a sitting councilman speaking before the Zoning Board on such a matter is extremely problematic on multiple levels is shocking enough.

What makes the matter transcend his usual ineptitude, buffoonery and wrong-headedness into what I can only describe as a form of legalized corruption is the fact that the developers, Danny and Jolene Tattoli, contributed $3,500 to Mr. Occhipinti’s election campaigns.

This apparent quid-pro-quo arrangement is the ultimate betrayal of the neighborhood residents Mr. Occhipinti purports to represent. He ran for council promising to be an “independent voice” for our ward, including a commitment to push for a southwest park. Instead, he turned around and took large sums from a developer who wanted to build where the park is supposed to go, then sought to insert himself into the Zoning Board process for granting his developer friend the variances needed to retroactively justify construction that he’d already completed. The appearance of impropriety is unmistakable and undeniable, not to mention the rank hypocrisy, given Mr. Occhipinti’s feigned outrage at the alleged appearance of such conflicts when it has suited him politically.

Mr. Occhipinti has proven himself to be what many of us always suspected – a bought-and-paid-for friend of developers, championing not the southwest park he promised, but rather the legal loopholes that allow this kind of betrayal to undermine the public interest at every turn.

Sincerely,
Jake Stuiver
Fourth Ward Resident

HHA Commissioner Jake Stuiver the other night sponsored anti "Pay to Play' rules that were voted in and announced that the HHA wait list for apartments will now be published on line.

If my recollection is correct Jake Stuiver was a unanimous appointment to the HHA - I think you should either provide details and some evidence to back up your claim of Jake cutting a deal or apologize to him.

Did Tim accept $3500 in campaign contributions from the developer whose project he asked to speak in favor of at the Planning Board or not?

If he did, then Mr. Stuiver's motivations for disclosing it are not particularly important. The impropriety of Councilman Occipinti's actions and the blatant hypocrisy demonstrated by those actions are extremely important.

That should be pretty obvious to anyone who cares about transparency and good government.

I await comment directly from POG and Mrs. Mason not from their paid Weehauken based finboy hack.

Everyone who has been paying attention understands that Timothy Occhipinti represents the people who provided the money to pay for buying the votes that put him in office and not the residents of the Fourth Ward.

Richard and Elizabeth Mason provided tens of thousands of dollars to the Occhipinti campaign which enabled them to hire over 500 workers in the 4th Ward on election day. Mr. Occhipinti despite his pre election claims of being independent is a rubberstamp for Mrs. Mason on the City Council.

This developer provide thirty five hundred dollars

and Mr. Occhipinti shows up to defend his grossly out of spec project at the Zoning Board.

It should also be pointed out that Jake Stuiver was at one point one of Elizabeth Mason's closest supporters and like a great many of others found that after some highly onerous ethical decisions by Mason decided they no longer support her.

It is no surprise that Mrs. Mason's supporters are so defensive about a former campaign leader now publicly questions the ethics of one of Mason's Council Minority.

This is ridiculous and a blatant politically motivated attack ordered by Zimmer from one of her most loyal bought and paid for lackeys. Jake Stuiver is in no position to speak about quid pro quos, conflicts of interest or backroom politics. Since cutting a deal with Zimmer for a seat on the Hoboken Housing Authority, Stuiver has been a lapdog for the administration, sending off baseless and hateful attack letters against anyone Zimmer tells him to. He is a callow drone and has no shame in writing whatever he's told, and he has no credibility left, just aimless hate that's not even his own. Jake is an embarrassment, he needs to take a good long look in the mirror and think about what he's become.

Tim is a much better councilman than Zimmer, Lenz, Campos or Ramos were, nevermind Jake.

Well Stuiver makes a direct hit on the Masonic Titantic of corruption with Occhipinti steering.

Same baseless character assassination by Beth Mason's attack mutt with yet another screen name.

Not a word addressing a single point on Tim Occhipinti. Fail.

Clearly Jake Stuiver hit upon a major nerve with the truth.
