Dear Editor:

We would like to take this opportunity to offer a heartfelt thanks to all those who assisted in the rescue and relief efforts in the aftermath of the U.S. Airways Flight 1549 crash. First we would like to thank the crew members of NY Waterway, the Coast Guard and Police and Fire Boats. Their courage and quick response time turned what could have been a horrific tragedy into a miracle. NY Waterway is not simply a form of public transportation but a vital part of the emergency response network that has come through for victims time and time again.

In addition, we would also like to thank the staff of Arthur’s Landing and the NY Waterway Ferry Terminal who were the first to assist the victims when they reached land, the Sheraton Hotel for providing warm blankets, Modell’s Sporting Goods for providing dry clothing and socks, and the Port Authority, Hudson County Sheriffs, Guttenberg, Union City, Weehawken and West New York Police Departments and regional Emergency Medical Service teams for quickly treating the victims to prevent further injuries.

In particular we want to thank Weehawken’s own Police Department, Ambulance Squad, Regional Fire Department and Department of Public Works who are always on the scene first when evacuees arrive on our shore and take the lead in coordinating all emergence service personnel.

Also, thank you to our senior department staff, the American Red Cross and the numerous volunteers who assisted in aiding and comforting the victims at the Weehawken Nutrition Center. A special thanks to Union City Mayor and State Senator Brian P. Stack for providing food and beverages as well as arranging for several victims to receive transportation home to Manhattan.

The fact that no one was seriously injured is truly a testament to the tremendous skill and courage of U.S. Airways Pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III as well as the quick response of emergency personal teams, businesses and residents who call Hudson County home. They should all hold their heads high for their part in the Miracle on the Hudson. Thank you all again.

Very truly yours,

Weehawken Mayor Richard F. Turner

and the Township Council
