From baseball memorabilia to vacuums to crock pots, visitors to the first annual Harmon Cove Giant Flea Market held on April 21 had a variety of items to buy in support of the Secaucus Animal Shelter. The event, which took place in the Meadowlands Hospital parking lot, raised over $3,000 and featured items from residents that live in the Harmon Cove Towers and condo developments.

“We initially were going to hold it at the Marina parking lot but after there were over 25 tables reserved I knew that was not going to work,” said Councilwoman Susan Pirro. She serves as the liaison to the animal shelter. The town then moved the event to the Meadowlands Hospital parking lot. In addition to providing the space for the flea market, the hospital offered free medical screenings during the event.

“I’m broke almost,” said Renee after she had purchased a number of items.

“We had hundreds of residents from town and employees of Meadowlands Hospital,” said Pirro.

Resident Alexandra Schumann had a table of personal items that she hoped to sell in preparation for her wedding in September. The items included vases, tea pots, books, and glassware.

“We are cleaning out items to make room,” said Schumann. She said she hopes the town council hosts another flea market next year.

Pirro said the shelter was successful in adopting out five out-of-state rescue puppies. She noted that another puppy, two adult cats, and three kittens were adopted the next day from people that attended the flea market.

“I want to thank the Harmon Cove residents and the Harmon Cove Condo Association,” said Pirro. The money raised will be used toward the Trap-Neuter-Release program to help curb the feral cat problem, enhancements for the shelter’s cats, and other shelter improvements according to Pirro. She noted that they are tentatively planning another flea market for Sept. 15 at the same location.
